Koivusaari metro station, Helsinki
Design: Helin & Co. Architects
Granite: Aurora®
Helsinki's Koivusaari metro station is a perfect fit for its beautiful seaside location. Upon its completion in 2017 Koivusaari was the world's only underwater metro station. The design of the station mimics the outlines of a wooden hull ship turned on its side. The building is upholstered in reddish-brown Aurora granite that resembles the cliffs of Helsinki’s shore.
The station was opened in 2017 as part of Länsimetro, the western extension of the Helsinki metro. According to the main architect of the project, Jutta Haarti-Katajainen from Helin & Co., Aurora was selected as one of the main materials, as it met both the strict visual and technical criteria set for the materials.
- Finnish granite is a durable and beautifully aging material. In addition, it is easy to clean and requires little maintenance. Aurora was chosen as the material for this maritime station, as its vibrant, reddish-brown color scheme is similar to that of the cliffs in the Helsinki region, she says.
Aurora®
Our Aurora® was named after the Aurora Borealis of the Nothern sky. Due to its beautiful wave-like pattern Aurora® is ideal for statement-making monuments, art & design pieces and interior decoration. As a versatile stone, Aurora® is also widely used in environmental construction and building projects.
